MORNING SHARK TRIPS

FROM
R3495.00 pp

INFORMATION

Our Morning trip is a viewing and shark cage diving trip. The two areas of operation are Seal Island and Cape Point. The trip involves diving with a scuba (hookah system) and no experience is needed.

The area location of the trips will be determined the day before, after determining the weather, shark activity, and which shark species we are more likely to encounter.

Our trips run from Simons Town, which is only one hour from Cape Town. All our crew are highly qualified and have spent years working on boats and with sharks.

Please note: Only children 8 and older are allowed on the boat. Children over 10 years are allowed to shark cage dive with the skippers permission.

ITINERARY

The exact meeting time will be given the day before as it varies depending on the sunrise.

  1. Meet at Simons Town Pier. The exact meet time will be communicated the day prior to the trip. Our boat is the Blue Pointer. You will be welcomed aboard, and a full safety briefing is given as well as the expected weather forecast for the day. An overview is given about what the trip entails, the do’s and don’ts and what is to be expected.
  2. We depart for Seal Island or Cape Point. Please bring your camera or phone to take photos of the incredibly beautiful scenery
SEAL ISLAND

Arrive at Seal Island. Seeing dawn breaking over the Island and False Bay is truly breathtaking. We do an inspection lap of the island giving information on the animal and bird life that is found on Seal Island. We will then choose the best spot to anchor up with regard to wind and swell direction.

The cage is lowered into the water. A bait line and carpet seal decoy are put in the water. Then it’s time to get up close and personal with the sharks. The average dive time per guest is about 20 minutes. Of course, we will not force anyone to go in the cage but would encourage it as it allows a whole new perspective on the sharks when you are underwater.

One of the several onboard guides will interact with the guests during the course of the trip to supply information and answer any questions they may have.

The itinerary will be slightly adjusted for times if we go to Cape Point.

AFTERNOON SHARK TRIPS

FROM
R3495.00 pp

INFORMATION

We offer scuba diving (hookah method), and no experience is needed. For the afternoon shark cage diving, we chose to only take small groups on our boat the Blue Pointer, so you can enjoy a comfortable trip in a more personal and exclusive environment.

Please note: Only children 8 and older are allowed on the boat. Children over 10 years are allowed to shark cage dive with the skippers permission.

Our trips run from Simons Town, which is only one hour from Cape Town. All our crew are highly qualified and have spent years working on boats and with sharks.

No Scuba qualifications are necessary! The cage floats just under the surface of the water, and it is situated alongside the boat. Only 5 enter the cage at a time, all scuba equipment stays on board and only the air hose enters the cage, allowing you to enjoy a great dive without cumbersome, heavy tanks and gear.

The average dive time is 20 minutes depending on the shark’s activity. Once everyone has had a go, and if there is enough time, then a second dive is allowed.

Our crew is highly trained, and safety is of utmost importance.

Shark species can include Broadnose Sevengill cow sharks, Great white sharks, and the odd Bronze Whaler or Copper Shark. (Mako Sharks & Blue sharks on Pelagic Trips).

Our trips feature scuba diving with the Hookah system, allowing you to breathe comfortably underwater throughout your dive. Unlike other operators, we ensure you don’t have to hold your breath while in the cage, enhancing your experience and allowing you to fully enjoy the adventure.

The shark cage is securely strapped next to the boat, and once you’re in, we feed air supply hoses directly into the cage. This setup, connected to a mouthpiece, provides a continuous supply of air, so you can remain submerged and enjoy uninterrupted views of the underwater world.

The location of our trips is carefully chosen the day before, based on weather conditions, shark activity, and the species we’re likely to encounter. Throughout the year, we see a variety of shark species including Bronze Whaler Sharks,  Broadnose Sevengill Sharks, and, depending on the season, Blues and Mako Sharks. Occasionally, we might even spot a Hammerhead Shark! Sadly we have not had Great White Sharks for a good few seasons but are ever hopeful of their imminent return and are just as eager to see what awaits us every Great White season.

Your Hookah Shark Cage Diving adventure will last approximately five hours, including a 4 to 4.5 hours and 35 minute boat ride to the dive site and back. We aim to provide at least 20 minutes in the shark cage, though this may vary depending on shark activity.

Rob Lawrence (Owner)
Rob was one of the first, to spearhead shark cage diving at Seal Island in Simons Town, in 1996, and to offer breaching trips in the area. His knowledge and experience span more than 26+ years.

I was born and raised in Cape Town. The ocean is deeply entrenched in my family, who have a long-standing history in False Bay as trek fisherman (beach net fishing) dating back to the late 1800’s. My grandfather used to tell me many fishing stories, you know the ones when he caught a fish “this size”. When I was a tiny boy, I spent many days playing on the beach and catching fish and I have always loved the sea. I started as a volunteer in 1992 with the White Shark Research project in Gansbaai before moving to False Bay where in 1996, we discovered the unique breaching behaviour of the great white shark. A friend and I took a small inflatable boat to Seal Island to look for sharks. We decided to tow a life jacket behind the boat. It was here when we saw our very first Great White Shark breach. I was totally “blown away” by what I saw. It was then that I knew I wanted to spend as much time as possible at Seal Island. I started working two jobs, and when enough money was saved, my friend and I bought a boat and began a company, which I still own and run called African Shark Eco-Charters, and we started taking guests to see these magnificent animals.

Poenas
I grew up with the traditional fishermen along the Muizenberg/Strandfontein coast. I left the commercial fishery industry in early 2000 after noticing a decline in annual catch records. I was lucky enough to land a job on the cage diving boats, and since 2003 season I started working with sharks, where in time I grew into a shark enthusiast. My duties onboard are skippering and crew. I Look forward to broadening more people’s views on these magnificent creatures that we’ve been working with over the years, as well as detailed information about the marine life in False Bay.

Wellington
I have been working with sharks for many years. I really enjoy working on the boat and being an experienced crew member, I have a deep respect for the ocean and its marine life. It has become part of my life.

Cat
I have always had a love for the ocean and a passion for protecting and conserving the organisms that call it home. This is what led me to a career in marine biology where I have recently obtained my Master’s degree. Of all the marine animals I have had the pleasure of working with, it is the sharks, penguins and turtles that have found a special place in my heart. When I am not on the cage diving boat, I spend my time working with the penguins at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Eddie
I’m a PADI instructor and have been diving for over 8 years. It all started as a hobby, till I took it as a profession, which I love passing the knowledge of diving to others. I joined the company in January of 2022. I have a love of sharks which are mostly misunderstood by many people. I think they are beautiful creatures which need more protection.

Tshawe
I am from University Estate Woodstock, and my love for the ocean began whilst watching national geographic programmes while taking trips to Robben Island, as my mom had worked there. I took particular interest in sharks because they seemed so cool and fearsome at the same time. In particular, it was always a dream of mine to see a white shark but working with them has been a dream come true. I love the ocean and all the creatures in it, and it is my duty in some way or another to protect and preserve these amazing animals.

Karen (Owner)
I am the “behind the scenes” woman. I am responsible for all the administration and back-end “stuff”, making sure that everything runs smoothly so that you can have a great shark trip.
